We use this both empathy and sympathy. For example, some people we don’t know seek advice to us. We can’t relate and so, we give them suggestion that help them solve their problems without sharing same emotion. It is difficult for us to use our sympathy if we don’t relate. Some people are like that, but not all of them. A person that work as marriage counseling might use empathy in dealing people because the problem would be between relationship of husband and wife, so being too much emotional and too much affected must be avoided. They can be both used, but it should be balance because too much is not good.
